He moved onto Real Madrid for £8 million in 2004 and although he was frequently used as a substitute, he scored 13 goals in La Liga. He returned to England to play for Newcastle United for a fee of £16 million. After a spate of injury he became team captain and was the top scorer for the 2007 - 08 season. When Newcastle were relegated, Owen transferred to Manchester United as a free agent and has been there ever since.
