Iconic People Poster: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), is better known around the world as Mahatma Gandhi, was a major spiritual and political leader of India and the Indian independence movement. Recognized in India as the ‘Father of the Nation’ his birthday, October 2nd is commemorated each year as ‘Gandhi Jayanti’, and is a national holiday.
A British-educated lawyer, Gandhi was known for his ideas of peaceful civil disobedience in the struggle for civil rights. He protested against oppressive taxation and discrimination and led campaigns for the liberation of women, for tolerance amongst differing religions and ethnicities and for the alleviation of poverty. Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by Hindu radical Nathuram Godse.
