People Poster: Born Marion Robert Morrison in May 1907, John Wayne was an Academy Award winning film star whose career began in the silent movies of the 1920’s. Known affectionately as “The Duke”, he is best known for his starring roles in World War II films and Westerns. In 1999 the American Film Institute named John Wayne as one of the greatest film stars of all time. Most famed for his distinctive walk, height and drawl, John Wayne passed away in 1979 from cancer of the stomach.
